Introduction

I recently visited the som tum specialty restaurant “Baan Som Tum” located about an 8-minute walk from BTS Ekamai Station, and I’d like to share my review.

About the som tum specialty restaurant “Baan Som Tum” in Ekamai

Baan Som Tum is located approximately an 8-minute walk from BTS Ekamai Station. It’s about a 15-minute walk from BTS Thong Lo Station.

As the name suggests, Baan Som Tum is a som tum specialty restaurant, featuring a dedicated som tum booth inside. They offer over 30 varieties of som tum, and when you order, the chefs in the booth prepare it fresh right before your eyes with impressive skill.

By the way, “Baan” means “home” in Thai. Baan Som Tum is not a high-end restaurant like the famous “Talingpling” in Thong Lo (which I’ve introduced before), but rather falls into the mid-range category, similar to the well-regarded “Sabaijai” in Ekamai. Here, you can enjoy delicious food at affordable prices. The interior has a refined, natural ambiance. In addition to som tum, Baan Som Tum also serves a variety of other Thai dishes.

Baan Som Tum Menu (Photos, Prices, Review)

To start, I tried the “Corn Som Tum with Salted Egg” (95 THB+). The chef in the som tum booth prepared it skillfully. The som tum looked incredibly fresh. As for the taste, it was undeniably delicious. It’s truly among the best som tum I’ve had in Bangkok. While Sabaijai’s som tum was also good, this surpassed it.

Next, I ordered the “Large Shrimp Fried Rice” (290 THB+). This portion is enough for 2-3 people. In Bangkok, shrimp and crab fried rice are consistently excellent, and this was no exception. It was delicious and reasonably priced.

I also had the “Fried Chicken Wings” (130 THB+). They were tastier than those from “Yamachan”.

The “Shrimp Omelet” (125 THB+) was also very good. Thai omelets are always a safe bet.

The “Tom Yum Goong” (165 THB+) was a bit too salty for my taste.

I was pleasantly surprised by the dessert, “Passion Fruit Ice Cream” (75 THB+). It was topped with salt, sugar, and chili sauce, and the balance of flavors was incredible. It could have easily been a strange combination, but they managed to create a harmonious and delicious taste.

For reference, a 1-liter bottle of Coke was 55 THB+.

Baan Som Tum Recommendation Score

To be helpful, I’ll assign a score similar to how it’s done on Tabelog (Japan’s top restaurant-review site). I personally rate Baan Som Tum, the som tum specialty restaurant in Ekamai, as approximately a 3.6 on the Tabelog scale. I’ll leave this note here for future reference.

The star of the show is undoubtedly the som tum, which is among the best in Bangkok. The other dishes are also quite good, and the prices are reasonable, contributing to the high rating. It would be even better if the prices were slightly lower or if the flavors of the non-som tum dishes were further improved.

Conclusion

Baan Som Tum, the som tum specialty restaurant in Ekamai, is highly recommended for som tum lovers. You can taste Bangkok’s finest som tum here.
