Introduction

I recently visited the Thai street food restaurant “Wattanapanit” located about a 23-minute walk from BTS Ekkamai Station, and I’d like to share my review.

About the Thai street food restaurant “Wattanapanit” in Ekkamai

Wattanapanit is located about a 23-minute walk from BTS Ekkamai Station. It’s situated on Ekkamai Road (Sukhumvit Soi 63), a bit further north from Don Quijote. As the walk from the station is quite long, taking a tuk-tuk or motorcycle taxi is recommended.

You’ll find Wattanapanit on the right side of Ekkamai Road as you head north. Its landmark is a large, well-worn iron pot at the storefront, which always seems to have a queue in front of it.

Wattanapanit is a Michelin-recognized establishment, having earned a Bib Gourmand. While this might suggest slightly higher prices, a bowl of their stew (with noodles) is only 100 THB, making it a relatively affordable way to experience Michelin-awarded cuisine.

The menu at Wattanapanit is available in Thai, English, and broken Japanese. Since the menu isn’t extensive, ordering should be straightforward. I visited with a friend who speaks Thai, so I’m unsure if the staff can communicate in English or Japanese. The interior has the typical atmosphere of a Thai street food eatery – not exactly pristine, to be honest. I didn’t use the restroom, so I can’t comment, but caution might be advised.

Wattanapanit Menu (Photos, Prices, and Review)

I ordered the “Beef Stew + Sen Yai (wide rice noodles) for 100 THB.” The beef stew itself is 80 THB, and the Sen Yai noodles are 20 THB. The beef stew has a unique, herbal aroma, which I found pleasant and seemingly healthy. The beef and offal in the stew are thoroughly tender and practically melt in your mouth. It pairs perfectly with beer! Perhaps the Sen Yai noodles were a bit too thick; thinner noodles might have been better for soaking up the rich broth.

They also offer a unique “goat stew” option. I tried a small portion from my friend’s order, and the broth was even richer and more flavorful. I can’t comment on any gaminess since I didn’t have the meat, but it seemed promising.

For beef stew and offal, I personally prefer “Heng Chun Seng” near Khlong Toei Market. You can enjoy the stew communally from a hot pot, and the taste is excellent. However, Heng Chun Seng’s location is less accessible, so I see Wattanapanit as a good alternative depending on the situation.

A large bottle of Chang beer costs 120 THB, which is a bit high for a Thai street food restaurant in Ekkamai.

Wattanapanit Recommendation Score

To provide a helpful reference, I’ll assign a score based on the Tabelog (Japan’s top restaurant-review site) scale. I’d personally rate Wattanapanit, the Thai street food restaurant near BTS Ekkamai Station, around 3.3 on the Tabelog scale.

Its strengths are the Michelin recognition (Bib Gourmand), delicious beef stew, and relatively affordable prices. The large pot at the storefront is also very photogenic for social media. It might be even better if it were slightly cheaper or served communally in a pot like at Heng Chun Seng.

Conclusion

Wattanapanit, the Thai street food restaurant near BTS Ekkamai Station, is recommended for those craving beef stew or beef offal stew. It’s a great place to casually try Michelin-recognized and Bib Gourmand-awarded dishes.
