Introduction

I recently visited the Isaan food specialist restaurant “Baan Isaan Mungyos” located about a 12-minute walk from BTS Phrom Phong Station, and I’d like to share my review.

About the authentic Isaan food restaurant “Baan Isaan Mungyos” in Phrom Phong

Baan Isaan Mungyos is an Isaan food specialist restaurant located about a 12-minute walk from BTS Phrom Phong Station. It’s about a 16-minute walk from BTS Asoke Station.

As the name suggests, Baan Isaan is an Isaan restaurant. If you’re looking for Isaan food in the Phrom Phong-Asoke area, this is definitely a must-visit spot. Further east, you’ll find places like “Sabaijai” and “Baan Som Tum” in Ekkamai, but Baan Isaan offers a more authentic, local Isaan dining experience.

The complimentary serving of wild vegetables and mountain herbs is generous and richly flavored. Interestingly, even after asking locals, the exact meaning of “Mungyos” remains unclear, though the prevailing theory is that it refers to a city name.

Baan Isaan opens in the evening, but when I arrived, the restaurant was already bustling with reservation customers before opening. There were many foreign customers. For some reason, the phone line doesn’t seem to connect, so I’m unsure how people made reservations. If anyone knows how to book, please let me know.

Baan Isaan Menu (Photos, Prices, Reviews)

I ordered the “Crab Fried Rice” for 130 THB. It was packed with crab and incredibly cheap for the price. The taste was also flawless.

I also had the “Thai Omelet” for 70 THB. As I always say, you can’t go wrong with a Thai omelet.

Next, I tried the “Meat & Seafood Chim Chum” for 280 THB. It contained not only herbs but also a generous amount of vegetables and mountain herbs, resulting in a rich and incredibly delicious broth. It’s possible that the wild vegetables and herbs from the appetizer were also included in the broth. I asked them to add the leftover appetizer ingredients to the pot and simmer them further. This was, by far, the best Chim Chum I’ve ever had. If you let the staff prepare it for you, they will cook it perfectly. There are various types of Chim Chum, but you absolutely must try this one. Highly recommended.

A large bottle of Singha beer was 110 THB.

Baan Isaan Rating

To provide a reference, I’ll assign a score in the style of Tabelog (Japan’s top restaurant-review site). For Baan Isaan Mungyos, an Isaan food specialist near Phrom Phong BTS station, I personally feel it corresponds to around a 3.7 on Tabelog. I’ll note this down for future reference.

All the dishes are affordable and delicious, but the Chim Chum with its rich broth is particularly noteworthy. The service is also good, and I haven’t found any downsides so far. The only slight inconvenience is figuring out how to make a reservation.

Conclusion

Baan Isaan Mungyos, an Isaan food specialist near BTS Phrom Phong Station, is recommended for those who want to enjoy affordable, delicious, and authentic Isaan and Thai cuisine.
