“Esan Bar & Restaurant” is about a 1-minute walk from BTS Thonglor Station. Do you know the restaurant “Midnight Diner (Shinya Shokudou, Japanese Diner)” located a little way back from the street on the north side of Sukhumvit Road just below Thonglor Station? If you go further down the alley, you will find a karaoke shop called “Tokimeki Thonglor Monogatari (Japanese Karaoke)”. Further back is Esan Bar & Restaurant.

Esan Bar has only been open for a few months, and is currently a hidden gem known only to those in the know. It seems to have a lot of Thai customers. The interior of the bar has a stylish atmosphere that combines Isaan and modern styles.

The menu at Esan Bar is mainly Isaan food. I don’t know much about Isaan food, so I looked it up and found out that Isaan food is characterized by its extremely strong spiciness compared to food from other regions. It is made spicy with the extremely hot chili pepper “prik kinu”.

I ate the “Som Tam 80B” recommended by the staff. The menu says “Thai papaya salad” in English. The som tam I had had so far was light, but the som tam at Esan Bar is spicy and has a strong flavor. I really liked it. The staff seemed to understand English, so if you ask for “less spicy”, they will make it less spicy.

The “Isaan Style Chicken and Glass Noodles Rich Soup 120B” is also recommended (it is not spicy). I had been drinking quite a bit, but I was surprised by this! I had no idea what kind of stock it was made from or what seasonings were in it, but it was simply delicious!

It contains lemongrass and herbs, and the base is somewhat similar to Tom Yum Goong. The chicken was well seasoned, and slurping up the glass noodles was amazing! Definitely give it a try!

Finally, I ate the “Vietnamese Sausage Salad (130B)”. The soup was so amazing that I don’t remember much about the sausage salad. Sorry.

Also, there is a happy hour every day from 4pm to 7pm, during which you can drink Singha beer (by the glass) for 50B. At the nearby Old English Pub, you can get Leo beer (pints) for 45B from 10am to 2pm, 65B from 2pm to 5pm, and 85B from 5pm to 7pm, so I think you can choose the right one depending on your needs.
