Introduction

I recently visited the Nagoya-style izakaya “Waraiya,” located about a 15-minute walk from BTS Phrom Phong station, and I’d like to share my review.

About the Nagoya-style izakaya “Waraiya” in Phrom Phong

Waraiya, a Nagoya-style izakaya, is located approximately a 15-minute walk from BTS Phrom Phong station. It’s a new venture from “Ichikara Japanese Noodle Sake Bar,” which has locations in Phra Khanong and Thonglor, and it only opened in January 2025. It’s not yet listed on Google Maps, so when heading to Waraiya, aim for Fuji Super Market Branch 3 – it’s directly opposite.

Waraiya offers a Nagoya-style izakaya menu, including kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers), kushiyaki (grilled skewers), doteni (stewed offal), tebasaki (chicken wings), fried chicken, various small dishes, bar snacks, ramen, yakisoba, rice dishes, soups, and desserts. They also had miso katsudon (pork cutlet bowl).

Waraiya Menu (Photos, Prices, Reviews)

I tried the “Kushikatsu Pork (3 skewers) for 89B++.” They were crispy and delicious.

I also had the “Kushiyaki Chicken Thigh (3 skewers) for 59B++,” “Kushiyaki Chicken and Leek (3 skewers) for 69B++,” “Kushiyaki Pork Intestine (3 skewers) for 59B++,” “Kushiyaki Chicken Gizzard (3 skewers) for 49B++,” “Kushiyaki Chicken Skin (3 skewers) for 49B++,” and “Kushiyaki Tsukune (3 skewers) for 79B++.” Both the salt and tare (sauce) seasonings were tasty. I was pleased with the affordable pricing on some items, which rivaled those at Ito-ya in Thonglor.

I ordered the “Doteni Offal (49B++),” “Doteni Daikon Radish (49B++),” and “Doteni Konjac (49B++).” I haven’t had doteni often, but these were heavily charred, giving them a strong bitter and sour taste that I didn’t particularly enjoy. My apologies if this review is off the mark.

The “Waraiya Salad (229B++)” was a standout hit. Topped with fried lotus root, whitebait, and other ingredients, it was exceptionally delicious.

The “Onigiri Katsuobushi (39B++)” was made with Japanese rice and was very filling.

An “Asahi Draft Beer (medium mug)” cost 99B++.

Waraiya Recommendation Score

To be helpful, I’ll assign a score following the style of Tabelog (Japan’s top restaurant-review site). For Waraiya, the Nagoya izakaya in Phrom Phong, I personally estimate it to be around a 3.2 on the Tabelog scale.

A strong point is the availability of Nagoya cuisine, which is rare in Bangkok, at affordable prices. While there’s some variation in the dishes, some kushikatsu and kushiyaki options are among the cheapest in Bangkok. However, when averaged out, the prices aren’t exceptionally low. The overall quality of the food, despite occasional highlights, isn’t consistently high, and the atmosphere could be improved to better match the izakaya experience. If these aspects were enhanced, it would be even better.

Conclusion

Waraiya in Phrom Phong is recommended for those who want to try Nagoya cuisine in Bangkok. You can enjoy dishes like doteni, tebasaki, and miso katsu.
