Introduction

I recently visited the melon pan & bakery “Oishi Melon Pang” located about a 9-minute walk from BTS Asoke Station, and I’d like to share my review.

About the Japanese bakery “Oishi Melon Pang” in Asoke

Oishi Melon Pang is located about a 9-minute walk from BTS Asoke Station. It’s in a rather hard-to-find spot; I think first-time visitors would need Google Maps to find it. The shop is quietly situated behind a building along Sukhumvit Soi 23, and I don’t recall seeing a sign from the street.

Given that the melon bread tastes exactly like the Japanese version and the company name includes “JAPAN,” I suspect it’s run by Japanese owners. I’ve been there a few times, and it always seems to be busy with Thai customers.

To recap, melon bread is a type of sweet bun that originated in Japan. While there are various theories, it’s said to have been invented around 1930 (early Showa period). Fundamentally, it doesn’t contain any actual melon juice; the “melon” name apparently comes from its appearance.

Menu at “Oishi Melon Pang” (Photos, Prices, Review)

I tried the “Melon Pan” for 60 THB. It’s said to be their most popular item. Visually, it looked no different from a Japanese melon pan, and it was the type without cream filling. Upon tasting it… the outside was crisp, and the inside was incredibly fluffy. I thought it was quite delicious. Although the price of 60 THB is a bit high, I believe it’s a must-try for melon bread enthusiasts.

I also tried the “Salt Butter Melon Pan” for 60 THB. It was elongated and didn’t have the characteristic melon pattern, but otherwise looked like a regular melon pan. Tasting it, the butter flavor was rich and aromatic. It seemed a bit high in calories, but I personally preferred this one. I highly recommend trying both!

As you can see in the photos, they offered a variety of other melon breads. They also had regular bread.

Recommendation Score for “Oishi Melon Pang”

To be helpful, I’ll assign a score similar to Tabelog (Japan’s top restaurant-review site). For the melon pan & bakery “Oishi Melon Pang” in Asoke, I personally estimate it to be around a 3.2 on the Tabelog scale. I’ll make a note of that.

The variety of delicious melon breads available is a major plus. Anyone living in Bangkok who loves melon bread should definitely try it. On the other hand, the price of 60 THB is set a bit high, which might be a slight deterrent for a casual purchase.

Conclusion

The melon pan & bakery “Oishi Melon Pang” in Asoke is recommended for all melon bread lovers residing in Bangkok.
