Introduction

I recently visited the Chinese restaurant “Hua Seng Hong” in Yaowarat, located about a 3-minute walk from MRT Wat Mangkon Station, and would like to share my review.

About the Chinese restaurant “Hua Seng Hong” in Yaowarat

Hua Seng Hong is a Chinese restaurant in Yaowarat, located about a 3-minute walk from MRT Wat Mangkon Station. Yaowarat is, as you know, Bangkok’s Chinatown.

Hua Seng Hong is a famous restaurant in Yaowarat where you can enjoy affordable shark fin soup. It’s visited by many people from various countries. There are also many groups that appear to be tourists.

Whole shark fins are sold at the storefront. It looks like good business! At the restaurant entrance, the signature dish, shark fin soup, is being prepared in a clay pot.

Hua Seng Hong Menu (Photos, Prices, Review)

I ordered the signature dish, “Shark Fin and Crab Soup M (660 THB).” This is a portion for 2-3 people. Considering you can have shark fin and crab for about 1000 yen (around 220 THB) per person, it’s very reasonably priced. Of course, it’s not a whole fin but rather pieces, but the taste is surely the same. By the way, the S size is 440 THB and the L size is 1320 THB, presumably serving 1-2 people and 4-6 people respectively. A few minutes after ordering, a bubbling clay pot was served. It’s difficult to take photos of soup, as the subject can become blurry. Please forgive me.

As for the taste, it’s very delicious with its rich soup and strong shark fin flavor. Is the soup a “Shang Tang” (high-quality chicken broth)? It has a complex and rich umami-filled taste. As I continued drinking, my body felt warmer. Perhaps it contains Chinese herbs? It feels healthy.

I also had the “Crab Fried Rice (150 THB).” It was delicious with plenty of crab, but I wouldn’t necessarily go out of my way to visit Hua Seng Hong just for this fried rice. While not as cheap as street food or food courts, the price is considered reasonable.

I also tried the “Shrimp Shumai (75 THB)” and “Shrimp Spring Rolls (185 THB).” They were not bad, but I believe you can find better dim sum at a dedicated dim sum restaurant.

For reference, “water” costs 20 THB, and the service charge was a flat 50 THB, not a percentage.

Hua Seng Hong Recommendation Score

To be helpful, I will provide a score similar to Tabelog (Japan’s top restaurant-review site). I personally think Hua Seng Hong, a Chinese restaurant in Yaowarat, corresponds to a Tabelog score of around 3.2. I’ll leave this note here.

The high point is the ability to eat delicious shark fin soup affordably. 1000 THB per person is quite inexpensive. On the other hand, the lack of other standout dishes besides the shark fin soup could be considered a low point. If your goal is to eat shark fin soup, Hua Seng Hong is a good choice.

Conclusion

Hua Seng Hong, a Chinese restaurant in Yaowarat, is recommended for those who want to eat delicious and affordable shark fin soup. It costs around 1000 THB (approx. 220 THB) per person.
