Introduction

I recently visited the Japanese izakaya “Gekka Japanese Dining” located about a 6-minute walk from BTS Asoke Station, and I’d like to share my review.

About the Japanese izakaya “Gekka Japanese Dining” in Asoke

Gekka Japanese Dining is situated about a 6-minute walk from BTS Asoke Station. It’s located on the 9th floor of the recently opened office building “P23 Tower” along Sukhumvit Soi 23. There’s no visible sign for Gekka from the street; you’ll only find a standing sign at the building’s entrance, which might make first-time visitors feel a bit uncertain. Follow your Google Maps and aim for the building marked “P23”.

P23 Tower is an office building with a somewhat minimalist exterior. However, upon entering Gekka, especially on the second floor, you’re greeted by a luxurious Japanese ambiance. The decor includes flowers, kimonos, and wooden mountain-inspired art pieces, contributing to the opulent atmosphere. They also have private rooms. I was surprised to see a traditional Japanese-style room with sliding fusuma doors here in Bangkok.

Gekka Japanese Dining Menu (Photos, Prices, Review)

There were 12 types of lunch menus available, ranging in price from 240 THB++ to 420 THB++ (from the Chicken Teriyaki Set to the Japan-Imported Sashimi Rice Bowl Set). Each menu includes the main dish, rice, miso soup, salad, pickles, wrapped vegetables with meat, chawanmushi (steamed egg custard), and cold green tea. Rice, miso soup, and cold green tea are refillable.

I ordered the “Luxurious Kushikatsu Set (Take) 270 THB++”. The main dish consisted entirely of kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers) including shrimp, salmon roe, sweet potato with truffle butter, myoga (Japanese ginger) and white miso minced pork, and pork fillet with grated daikon and ponzu sauce. The breadcrumbs were fine, giving the skewers an overall refined feel. Their small size further enhances this elegance. The style is more akin to a tempura restaurant, high-end Japanese eatery, or kappo-style dining rather than “Osaka Kushikatsu”. You can enjoy them with various sauces, dashi broth, salt, or lemon. The staff will kindly recommend which condiment to use for each skewer, so be sure to listen closely.

All the skewers were delicious. The shrimp were wonderfully plump. I enjoyed them with the recommended salt and lemon. The other skewers were equally delightful.

Furthermore, the staff were very attentive, quickly noticing when my rice, miso soup, or tea were running low and refilling them promptly. Their service left a very positive impression.

Gekka Japanese Dining Recommendation Score

Hoping this might be helpful, I’ll provide a score based on the Tabelog (Japan’s top restaurant-review site) rating system. For the Japanese izakaya “Gekka Japanese Dining” in Asoke, I personally feel it corresponds to around a 3.3 on Tabelog, so I’ll note that down.

Conclusion

Gekka Japanese Dining in Asoke is recommended for those who want to enjoy a slightly upscale Japanese lunch with friends or a partner. Their signature kushikatsu are refined, offer great value, and are delicious.
