Introduction
I recently visited the Japanese set meal and izakaya restaurant “Umashokudou 1gou-ten,” located about a 4-minute walk from BTS Phra Khanong station, and would like to share my review.
About the Japanese set meal and izakaya restaurant “Umashokudou” in Phra Khanong
Umashokudou 1gou-ten, a set meal and izakaya restaurant, is located about a 4-minute walk from BTS Phra Khanong station, down a small alley off Sukhumvit Road.
Umashokudou opened in 2012 and reportedly had up to five branches at one point. Currently, they seem to have settled on two locations, with the second branch situated very close to the first.
The appearance of Umashokudou is exactly like a Japanese diner. Their simple construction seems to be a way to keep food and drink prices down. Conversely, it might be a very comfortable place to be. They also had a raised seating area.

Umashokudou Menu (Photos, Prices, Reviews)
First, we ordered a large bottle of Chang beer (110 THB) and Nameko Oroshi (grated nameko mushrooms with grated daikon radish) for 80 THB. The Nameko Oroshi was a surprisingly generous portion. I was expecting a small side dish, but it was about twice that size, almost as big as a large chawanmushi (steamed egg custard). And it was delicious. The Nameko Oroshi and grated daikon radish, which I hadn’t had in a while, went down smoothly and made me want more beer. We were a group, and couldn’t resist ordering another round.
We also had Edamame (80 THB), Tofu Salad (136 THB), Chicken Karaage (150 THB), Croquettes (115 THB), and Takoyaki. They were all classic izakaya dishes and quite good. They certainly went well with the beer.
The Spaghetti Neapolitan was part of a promotion, priced at 200 THB for a large portion, usually 180 THB. It was a substantial serving and great value for money.
The set meals (teishoku) were generally in the low 200 THB range. In areas like Phrom Phong and Thong Lo, you’d expect to pay around 300 THB. Considering the Phra Khanong location, the prices are quite reasonable. The set meals are available for both lunch and dinner.

Umashokudou Recommendation Score
To be helpful, I’ll assign a score based on the Tabelog scale. For Umashokudou, a set meal and izakaya in Phra Khanong, I personally feel it’s equivalent to a 3.3 on Tabelog. I’ll leave this note here.
Conclusion
Umashokudou, the set meal and izakaya in Phra Khanong, is a cheap and delicious Japanese diner. It offers great value for money. It is recommended for both those looking for set meals and those who want to enjoy it as an izakaya.
