Introduction

I recently visited the popular Myanmar restaurant “Jupiter Samrong” located in Phra Khanong Market, about a 9-minute walk from BTS Phra Khanong station, and I’m excited to share my review.

About the Myanmar restaurant “Jupiter Samrong” in Phra Khanong Market

Jupiter Samrong is located about a 9-minute walk from BTS Phra Khanong station. It’s situated within Phra Khanong Market, or more precisely, on a street one block further into the market area.

There are several Myanmar restaurants in and around Phra Khanong Market. “Myanmar Restaurant Laxmi,” which I reviewed previously, is one of them. I’m not sure why there are so many Myanmar restaurants in Phra Khanong, but since Laxmi was so good, my expectations for Jupiter Samrong were high.

I visited during lunchtime, and customers were constantly coming and going, which confirmed its popularity. Besides Thai and what seemed to be Myanmar customers, there were also many “farang” (foreigners). I was the only Japanese person there besides my companion.

Jupiter Samrong Menu (Photos, Prices, Reviews)

Looking at the menu, Jupiter Samrong offers Indian and Thai cuisine in addition to Myanmar dishes. The menu board is very easy to read with pictures, and it lists about 40 items, starting with their signature dish, Mohinga. The menu is in Thai, Burmese, and English.

I ordered the signature dish, “Mohinga (50B).” Honestly, I’m not usually a fan of noodle dishes like somen or Mohinga, but this was incredibly delicious! The rich broth clung to the noodles, and the generous toppings made it very satisfying. It contained something like crispy fried bits, which seemed to help the rich broth adhere even better to the noodles. My perception of Mohinga has completely changed.

I also tried the “Tea Leaf Salad (50B),” which is another classic Myanmar dish. It’s a mix of various ingredients. Fermented tea leaves, fried beans, cabbage, carrots, garlic, chili, and white sesame seeds were among them, though I couldn’t identify everything. Tasting it… it was incredibly delicious. Laxmi’s tea leaf salad was good, but this was about three times better. The fermented tea leaves were very sticky, and combined with the other ingredients, it created a rich flavor. It was a bit salty. Overall, Jupiter’s dishes are “rich and flavorful.” This is a biased review because it suits my taste. Beer goes perfectly with nibbling on the tea leaf salad! Highly recommended! You must order it!

We also had two curries: “Mutton Curry (100B)” and “Chicken Curry (50B).” I once heard from a Myanmar person that in Myanmar, a lot of oil is used in curries to express hospitality. However, the curries at Jupiter didn’t seem to have an excessive amount of oil. This doesn’t mean they weren’t hospitable. Perhaps because Jupiter attracts many Thai and foreign customers, they prioritize customer preferences over tradition. I remember my stomach feeling heavy after eating oily Myanmar curry when I was younger, but the curries here were delicious without being greasy. I recommend eating them with “Samosas.” They said it was 100B for three, but the bill suggested it was cheaper. They also recommended “Aloo Puree (50B),” which is similar to chapati, so I ordered that too. It was also good.

We also tried the “Bean Soup (30B),” “Vegetable Fried Rice (50B),” and “Stir-fried Water Spinach (50B).” These were also delicious.

For drinks, we had a large bottle of “Chang Beer (70B).” Phra Khanong is quite affordable. In Phrom Phong or Thong Lo, it would cost around 120-150B. It feels like a perpetual happy hour here. Jupiter is also perfect for daytime drinking!

Incidentally, there was a thermos on the table filled with warm tea, which you could drink freely. Such a thoughtful gesture!

For six people eating and drinking, the cost was about 150B per person. Laxmi was also cheap and delicious, but… the Myanmar food in Phra Khanong Market is truly formidable. The cost performance is too good!

Jupiter Samrong Rating

To be helpful, I’ll assign a score based on the Tabelog (Japan’s top restaurant-review site) scale. I personally feel that the Myanmar restaurant “Jupiter Samrong” in Phra Khanong Market is equivalent to a 3.6 on Tabelog, so I’ll note that down.

Conclusion

Jupiter Samrong, a Myanmar restaurant in Phra Khanong Market, offers outstanding value for money. The food is cheap and delicious, and a large bottle of beer is only 70B. It’s also recommended for daytime drinks!
