Introduction

I recently visited the Thai & Japanese food stall “Lab Lab Lab Pridi 43” located about a 38-minute walk from BTS Phra Khanong station, within a food court. I’m here to share my review.

About the Thai & Japanese food stall “Lab Lab Lab Pridi 43” in Phra Khanong

Lab Lab Lab Pridi 43 is situated approximately a 38-minute walk from BTS Phra Khanong station, along Phra Khanong Road (Sukhumvit Soi 71). Given the considerable distance from the station, taking a tuk-tuk, motorbike taxi, or regular taxi is recommended.

The restaurant is located inside a large food court. This food court houses a total of about 10 stalls, with numerous tables and chairs set up. It’s covered, so rain isn’t an issue, but it’s open-air without air conditioning or fans. However, there is one air-conditioned room at the back of the food court, which might be available for a fee.

The owner is said to be Thai and trained in Japanese cuisine, which explains the extensive Japanese menu. While not originally from Japan, beef tartare and yukke, familiar to Japanese diners, are likely the signature dishes. Beef tartare has been banned by law in Japan since 2012, making it a rare delicacy today. It’s a pleasant surprise to find it available in Bangkok. While it’s likely safe, consume at your own risk. They also offer sashimi, another Japanese staple.

There are also many Thai dishes available, such as Som Tum and Jim Jum. Looking at the menu, there seems to be a focus on Isaan cuisine, suggesting the owner might be from that region. Incidentally, Isaan also has a culinary tradition of consuming raw meat.

“Lab Lab Lab Pridi 43” Menu (Photos, Prices, Reviews)

First, the signature dishes: “Beef Tartare 80B” and “Yukke 80B.” This is incredibly cheap, around 350 JPY. To be able to eat beef tartare, which is unavailable in Japan, at such a low price, and to have it be delicious… it’s pure happiness. It tastes just like it did at Japanese yakiniku restaurants 12 years ago. The combination of sesame oil, salt, garlic, ginger, and onion is perfect. The yukke is also rich and delicious.

I also tried the “Beef Sashimi 80B,” which was also very tasty and, again, incredibly cheap. This is completely raw, not seared.

I also had the “Som Tum with Salted Egg 60B,” a classic Isaan dish. A friend told me that the salted egg is finely chopped and mixed into the Som Tum. The rich salty flavor blends wonderfully.

For the main course, I ordered “Jim Jum with Pork & Vegetables 220B.” This is an Isaan-style hot pot. I must admit it was my first time trying it, but it was absolutely delicious. Jim Jum is served with ponzu sauce. They say that coating the pork in raw egg before adding it to the pot seals in the flavor. My friend mentioned that there are still many other great Jim Jum places, so I’m excited to explore more in the future.

For the finale of the Jim Jum, I had “Instant Noodles (Mama) 15B?” and “Glass Noodles 15B?”. It’s just like finishing a hot pot in Japan. The noodles at the end were delicious. The glass noodles were also great.

By the way, a large bottle of “Chang Beer” was 80B. I love Phra Khanong for its affordable prices.

Lab Lab Lab Pridi 43, while mostly frequented by locals with no Japanese customers in sight, has the feeling of a place that’s about to become very popular. It’s the kind of place you want to visit before it gets crowded.
