Introduction

I recently visited the soba restaurant “Nama Soba Azuma” located about a 19-minute walk from BTS Phrom Phong Station, and I’d like to share my review.

About the Japanese soba restaurant “Nama Soba Azuma” in Phrom Phong

Nama Soba Azuma, Soi 49 branch, is located about a 19-minute walk from BTS Phrom Phong Station. It’s situated along Sukhumvit Soi 49, slightly north of Samitivej Hospital. From BTS Thong Lo Station, it’s about a 23-minute walk.

If you’re coming from BTS Phrom Phong Station, the main branch on Sukhumvit Soi 33/1 is likely closer. The main branch of Nama Soba Azuma is about a 3-minute walk from BTS Phrom Phong Station, just before Fuji Supermarket #1.

Nama Soba Azuma is a soba noodle restaurant that operates 17 branches mainly in Kyushu, Japan. In Bangkok, they reportedly use their own brand of buckwheat flour, soy sauce, and soba dipping sauce, the same as used in Japan.

At Nama Soba Azuma, the price is the same for up to 3 portions of soba, so ordering 3 portions is a better deal. When I had the Tempura Zaru Soba, 2 portions were equivalent to a regular serving, so I believe 3 portions would be considered a large serving.

I ordered the “Shrimp Tempura Platter for 350 THB”. Since it was my first time, I was worried I wouldn’t finish it, so I opted for 2 portions, but it was surprisingly a smaller amount than I expected (perhaps 1 portion is about 0.7 of a regular serving). I regretted not ordering 3 portions. The tempura consisted of 3 shrimp and, if I recall correctly, one asparagus. It came with condiments, soba dipping sauce, and tempura dipping sauce.

When I tasted it, it was delicious. The soba had a strong flavor, was firm, and had a great texture. “This is it.” I was surprised to be able to eat such authentic Japanese soba in Bangkok. Soba noodles require very specific buckwheat flour and water, so it should be difficult to replicate them in a foreign country. I felt the effort the company put in. It reminds me of “Tsuru Udon” for udon and “Nama Soba Azuma” for soba. The tempura was also lightly fried and very good. At 350 THB++ (approximately 2,000 JPY with the 5 JPY/THB exchange rate), the price is a bit on the higher side.

By the way, cold tea, hot tea, and soba-yu (soba cooking water) were complimentary.

Recommendation Score for “Nama Soba Azuma”

To be helpful, I’ll assign a score based on the Tabelog format. I personally estimate the Phrom Phong soba restaurant “Nama Soba Azuma” to be around 3.3 on Tabelog. I’ll leave this note here.

The high rating comes from its successful replication of authentic Japanese soba in Bangkok. I thought the price was a little high.

Conclusion

Nama Soba Azuma in Phrom Phong is a renowned soba restaurant that faithfully recreates authentic Japanese soba. It’s recommended for soba lovers and anyone craving delicious soba.
