Introduction

I recently visited the Japanese bakery & cafe “Foobreca” located about a 7-minute walk from BTS Thonglor Station, and I’d like to share my review.

Bakery & Cafe “Foobreca” @ Thonglor

Foobreca is located about a 7-minute walk from BTS Thonglor Station. From the station, head south on Sukhumvit Soi 36 for about 3-4 minutes, then turn right at the next alley, and you’ll find it shortly thereafter.

Foobreca is run by a Japanese baker. (For those unfamiliar, the correct term for a baker is “boulanger,” not “chef”).

While Foobreca offers some standard bread types, they specialize primarily in sweet pastries rather than loaves or baguettes. The display features a variety of delightful sweet breads, generally priced between 55-75 THB. They are particularly known for their salt bread. They also offer “manul bang” (garlic bread), a recipe they learned from a Korean boulanger.

I also appreciated their initiative to offer discounted bread to combat food waste, with items marked down by 30%. I learned that Foobreca places great importance on their bread and rarely discards any, which is a wonderful sentiment.

Foobreca Menu (Photos, Prices, Reviews)

I tried a variety of items and would like to share my thoughts on the most distinctive ones. (Apologies for not getting photos of every single bread and for not remembering all the prices).

I tried the “Salt Bread” (55 THB). The first thing that struck me was the flavor of the wheat – a rich, toasty taste filled my mouth. The buttery notes complemented it beautifully.

Next, I had the “Manul Bang (Salt Garlic Sugar).” It’s made by slicing the salt bread and dipping it into a sugar syrup. It has a sweet, garlicky flavor that’s truly addictive. They say the Korean boulanger who taught them this recipe built a house with it!

I also tried the “Cinnamon Roll” (65 THB). It was generously topped with sugar and cinnamon. Delicious!

All the other breads were also very tasty. The breads at Foobreca have a very strong wheat flavor that holds up well even when paired with rich toppings like sugar. They don’t get lost in the sweetness.

Foobreca Recommendation Score

To be helpful, I’ve assigned a score based on the Tabelog (Japan’s top restaurant-review site) rating system. I personally consider the Thonglor bakery “Foobreca” to be around a 3.5 on the Tabelog scale.

The strong wheat flavor in their bread is a key highlight. Even with rich toppings like sugar, the bread’s inherent taste shines through. However, this might not be ideal for those who prefer milder flavors.

Conclusion

The Thonglor bakery “Foobreca” is recommended for those who appreciate bread with a prominent wheat flavor. Their pure salt bread is delicious on its own, and the Korean-style manul bang (garlic bread), coated in a sweet syrup, is also a must-try.
